Waste Management Names Sustainability Challenge Winner
Waste Management (NYSE: WM) today announced that the Shell Houston Open has been named the winner of its inaugural Sustainability Challenge. In a contest that invited all PGA TOUR tournaments to detail their respective sustainable event initiatives, The Shell Houston Open received the highest ranking out of 24 tournament submissions for its cumulative score in the following categories: Materials Management, Natural Resources Tracking and Conservation, Economic Impact and Overall Sustainability.
In an effort to spread sustainability-driven event planning, similar to the successful programs implemented by Waste Management at its eponymous Phoenix Open, The PGA TOUR distributed a voluntary questionnaire. The sustainability services team at Waste Management graded participating tournaments.
As the winners of the Sustainability Challenge, Shell Houston Open executives were invited to attend the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open and Waste Management’s fourth annual Executive Sustainability Forum during tournament week (Jan. 27 – Feb. 2, 2014).
“In addition to honoring us for our sustainability initiatives at the Shell Houston Open, Waste Management was also responsible for driving much of the behind-the-scenes efforts that are helping us build the most sustainable event possible,” said Steve Timms, tournament director for the Shell Houston Open and president and CEO of the Houston Golf Association. “We are committed to the belief that sustainability is the right thing to do.”
“Waste Management is not only dedicated to greening the game of golf and raising the bar in sustainability and sports, but we also have a social responsibility to educate and engage others,” said Dave Aardsma, chief sales and marketing officer, Waste Management. “The Sustainability Challenge has provided us the opportunity to recognize the successes of PGA TOUR tournaments like the Shell Houston Open so that others will be encouraged to follow our lead.”
Since 2007, Waste Management has been a committed partner to the Houston Golf Association and the Shell Houston Open, played at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. In 2013, the Shell Houston Open committed to executing a sustainable tournament and to reducing the amount of materials sent to the landfill. To help achieve this, Waste Management designed a plan to produce less waste and enhance diversion through material reuse, recycling and composting. Through the development of an enhanced triple-bottom-line sustainability strategy (incorporating three dimensions of performance: social, environmental and financial) the 2013 tournament exceeded environmental goals and expectations and achieved an overall diversion rate of 87.3 percent.
As title sponsor of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Waste Management continues to evolve innovative programs to increase environmental and social responsibility at the tournament. The Waste Management Phoenix Open has become a major platform for showcasing Waste Management’s sustainability initiatives, including the four Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle and recover.

Waste Management Named to Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies List for the Seventh Year in a row
Award recognizes leadership in ethical business practices and commitment to sustainability
Company has earned award for seven consecutive years with dedication to ethical business practices and sustainability
This is the seventh time that Waste Management has been honored with this award, which recognizes organizations that continue to raise the bar on ethical leadership and corporate behavior. World's Most Ethical Company honorees understand the correlation between ethics, reputation and daily interactions with their brand and that the award belongs as much to their associates as it does to them. Waste Management is one of only two companies in the Environmental Services industry honored this year.
"This recognition reflects our most fundamental commitment to keeping the environment--and our people and our neighbors--safe," said David Steiner, chief executive officer and president of Waste Management. "As an industry leader, we continue to develop strategies to extract value from waste stream to minimize our environmental impact, while at the same time demonstrating a culture where safety and ethics are core beliefs."
"The entire community of World's Most Ethical Companies believe that customers, employees, investors and regulators place a high premium on trust and that ethics and good governance are key in earning it," said Ethisphere's Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. "Waste Management joins an exclusive community committed to driving performance through leading business practices. We congratulate everyone at Waste Management for this extraordinary achievement."
The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute's Ethics Quotient(TM) framework. The Ethics Quotient framework has been developed over years of effort to provide a means to assess an organization's performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The Ethics Quotient framework and methodology was determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere's network of thought leaders and from the World's Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel.

Holi Gala at WM Logistics!!!!
Holi is the festival of colours; a day that symbolizes
the victor of good over evil, and a festival that is most enjoyed by the youth!
Holi also celebrates the arrival of spring with lots of colors, compassion, fun
and food! Yes, you cannot possibly celebrate festivals in India without the
mention of food. Ask anyone and they will tell you how irresistible gujjiyas,
the special Holi sweets, are.
Elaborating Holi in the office....
What can be a better idea to break out of daily office routine and confines of our own cubicles. This year, whole WM Logistics team celebrated the festival with jollity, passion and many colors. The credit goes to our E2 team for organizing the festivities with such great efforts. The whole office Cafeteria was full of colors. Entering into the office cafeteria made our mood colorful and throughout the day the color mania was spread all over. The base theme of this Day was Rainbow Holi. All the employees gathered at the cafeteria in evening to celebrate Rainbow Holi. This reminded us of our childhood.
Seven liquid colors and a chart sheet were placed there,
all the employees were requested to place their colored hand print on chart
sheet. The simple colors and blank card-sheets transformed into a WM Family
Rainbow, with the different color handprints of all the Employees.
WM LOGISTICS FAMILY
RAINBOW
Along with this, Gujjiyas and dry powder color was also
placed so employees who are interested to play dry Holi can enjoy that.
This event made us realize that celebrations need not be fancy or big, even small gatherings or acts of togetherness can bring smile and fresh energy within the team. And that is what the true reasons behind celebrating this festival of colors is, to leave behind all worries and look forward to a new Beginning. It is a culture at WM Logistics Indore to celebrate every occasion with fellow colleagues and friends like a Big Family! We all look forward to events and celebrations, and now these extraordinary times of coming and celebrating together have become an integral part of our Organization’s culture.

WML Cricket League (WCL) - WM Logistics Indore
Let us recall that awesome moment of our childhood when we got out on the very first ball while playing cricket and we said to the baller
It Was A Try Ball Dear….……
Cricket is like a religion for all Indians, and we at WM
Logistics are no exception… J
We initiated our first Cricket Tournament in March 2014. All the
employees were extremely interested to take part in this tournament. As cricket
is a Team Game, so entire organization was divided into four different teams.
Every Team needed to choose their Captain and Vice-captain and were
asked to give a catchy name to their Cricket Team. Each team created its own logo for the event,
and they even went so far as to make t‐shirts emblazoned with their team names
and logos.
The Ball Burners
T10 Blasters
Cricket Sumos
The Spartan Soldiers
This was a daylong out-door event and all the employees were invited along with their families.
The activity started with a small Welcome at Office building,
after which we all boarded the Bus and started for the Venue (Cricket Ground).
There were four Matches in one single day and every team was
expected to play two matches. Winners of first two matches played with each other
for Winner and runner-up position and the team who could not win the first two
matches played the match for the third position.
The Match started with the Toss,
the Captains of two teams came across for the Coin Toss……
The entire day was full of fun. People enjoyed the commentary
throughout the matches and provided their inputs, which made it more
interesting.
Players on the ground..
Audience in the Pavilion…
Even the sunrays could not
affect the players. Team Members waiting for their turn to Bat..
Kids too having fun with their Parents.. J
Four teams
entered, but only one emerged victorious at the WML Cricket League. An
estimated 60 employees arrived at the field to enjoy the day’s events and cheer
on their teams. For the players, this tournament was not merely a one‐day
event; preparation began well in advance. The employees gathered each weekend
for practice 2‐3 weeks prior to the tournament, and each devised their own
strategies to win.
Though there was only
one champion, it was another great company event for WM Logistics Indore.
Everyone involved had a great time ‐ from the players to the supporters. The
event was a success for both the company and staff. The tournament was a great
chance for our valued employees to get together on a beautiful Sunday
afternoon… Kudos to Happiness Brigade for organizing such a Great Event.

Waste Management: A Fantastic And Defensive Company
Summary
- The benefits of value and momentum strategies on an individual basis have been well-documented in financial literature.
- Waste Management's asset base is the largest and most diverse in the industry. We like this position.
- We think defensive environmental exposure makes sense in today's volatile (and pricey) market environment.
But first, a little background to help with the understanding of this piece. At Valuentum, we think a comprehensive analysis of a firm's discounted cash-flow valuation, relative valuation versus industry peers, as well as an assessment of technical and momentum indicators is the best way to identify the most attractive stocks at the best time to buy. This process culminates in the Valuentum Buying Index, which ranks stocks on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. If in-depth academic research on our process is your fancy, please click here. Here's a brief summary of the abstract:

Valuing Women, Inspiring Futures
March
7, 2014 Friday Morning. A happy morning because most awaited Saturday was only
few hours away…… I reached office on regular time, and while I was going
through my emails suddenly, a mail popped up from our “Happiness Brigade”…………
“Wishing You all a Very Very Happy Women’s Day!!!
All
the Beautiful and Talented Women of our WM Family are invited in the Main Bay
Area at 12:00 noon sharp.
And, all Men are invited to be at their side.. J”
This looked to be exciting, although
Women’s Day was on March 8, but it was falling on Saturday that’s why our
Organization was celebrating it on March 7.
Sharp at 12:00 all the employees
gathered in the Main Bay Area. Everyone was clue less that why are we all here.
We all noticed that all male members of E2 Team “The Happiness Brigade” were
already waiting for us..
Everyone was discussing what could be
the reason for calling us here, and then…….. We saw three trays full of
Chocolates, Flowers and Cards entering the Bay Area!!!!!!
Guess what!!! These Flowers, Chocolates and Cards were
for honoring Female Employees. All the Female employees were Surprised and
Happy to receive such Respect and Honor. Trust me this was beyond Expectations.
At the same time, we got to know that our Organization (WM Logistics) takes
utmost pleasure and pride to say that one fourth of our valued employees are
Women
This
is really a good symbol specifically when we all talk about the “Gender
Equality”. It is rightly said that Countries with more gender equality have
better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace
agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women
enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education,
anti-discrimination and child support. In short, equality for women means
progress for all.
After this small gathering, all the
smiling faces returned to workJ. Nevertheless, this was not
the end; the second half of the day started with more excitement. E2 Team had
put up Charts in the cafeteria for “Slogan Writing Competition” and it turned
out to be one of the main attractions of the Day. All the employees took active
participation in the Competition and came up with their beautiful thoughts, and
shared their feelings by penning down their views in Words.
This was a
beautiful way to make, Women in the organization feel that the efforts they put
in every front, are truly valued and appreciated.
This event was really successful, as I
being a Women enjoyed it a lot and felt Valued. All the Employees were all smileys
and were thankful to the E2 Team (The Happiness Brigade).
I am really Happy that I am a part of
WM Logistics Indore….

Waste Management compressed natural gas (CNG) collection
Just one of twelve Waste Management compressed natural gas (CNG) collection trucks deployed in the cities of Santa Ana and Irvine, CA. The trucks were purchased with a grant from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) in an effort to improve air quality in the Southern California region early last year.
Waste Management today added its 1000th natural gas truck to its fleet, making it the largest owner and operator of clean-running, heavy duty refuse trucks in North America.
The trucks Waste Management runs out of its Carson service yard – as well as a third of its California clean fleet -- are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) derived from the decomposition of organic waste in its Altamont Landfill in Livermore, CA.. Since November 2009, the landfill has been generating as much as 13,000 gallons of LNG per day, a virtually zero-carbon transportation fuel.
In just one year, Waste Management's 1000 natural gas trucks will displace eight million gallons of petroleum and eliminate 45,100 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste Management also has CNG and LNG fueling stations at 17 of its facilities throughout North America with more under development. Woods added that the company hopes to develop a new landfill-gas-to-LNG facility at its Simi Valley, Calif., landfill.
Waste Management was the first solid waste company to join the California Climate Action Registry. In 2003, the company committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through increased recycling, the use of alternative transportation fuels, and the beneficial use of landfill gas. The natural gas fleet is part of the company's environmental sustainability initiative to direct capital spending of up to $500 million per annum over a 10-year period to reduce its fleet emissions by 15 percent and increase the fuel efficiency of its fleet by 15 percent by 2020.

The company continues to focus on pricing productivity initiatives and also generating some very strong free cash flow and those one of the highest dividend yields in the space and I’d like to welcome management from the company, Jim Trevathan, who is COO; and John Morris, who is the Senior Vice President of Field Operations; and we have Ed Egl, Director of Investor Relations. Jim?
Jim Trevathan
Thank you, Bill. Appreciate it. Thank you for the opportunity to tell our story and let you see how we’ve progressed over the last year and what we expect for 2014 and beyond. We are, let’s say, let get through, I guess, you all can read that at your leisure.
We are the industry leaders as Bill said. We are proud ourselves in that. We generate strong return on investments, the strongest in our industry. We give back cash to our shareholders. It’s the absolute foundation of our company, last year $900 million -- $922 million to be exact and cash given back to shareholders little over $600 million of that in form of dividends and about $300 of it in share buyback. We are in the top 10% of dividend paying company with about 3.7% yield at today’s price.
From an asset standpoint, as the leader in the industry, we are set up nicely, across North America especially. We from a revenue standpoint, or free cash flow standpoint, or CapEx, we have done well the last of couple years.
